Although we are still waiting for some decent warm weather, we heard our first 2016 cuckoo at Mas Baronet on 18th March: now it’s a daily event. We also saw a flock of house martins in Gourdon on 30th. There have been plenty of red kites passing over and we saw a male hen harrier on 30th hunting a nearby wheat field.
For a few weeks now the pond has been alive with toads, frogs, newts and salamanders and the midwife toads are piping at night – especially if it’s about to rain.
When coming home from a nearby restaurant last week, our gite guests disturbed some wild boar on the drive, probably saving the garden from a swinish invasion!
The first green-winged orchids (Orchis morio) are starting to emerge and join the profusion of cowslips.
